Domestic Violence
More than 10 million women and men become victims of DV or IPV each year. 1 in 3 women murdered each year are killed by a partner.
See Something, Say Something. It will only take a minute.
Hidden behind closed doors
Domestic violence refers to a pattern of behavior used by one partner to maintain power and control over another in an intimate relationship. It can take many forms — physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, and financial abuse — and can occur in any type of relationship.
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a subset that specifically refers to violence between current or former intimate partners.
Prevalence
Nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States — more than 10 million women and men each year.
Causes & Risk Factors
No single cause. Risk factors include power and control dynamics, low self-esteem and insecurity, and manipulation by the abuser.
Effects
Physical injuries, emotional distress including anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Abusers may exert financial control and isolate victims from friends and family.
Solutions
A comprehensive approach: education and awareness, support for victims through shelters and counseling, and accountability for abusers.
“They don't have to hit you for it to be abuse. They can degrade, humiliate, blame, curse, manipulate, or try to control you. It's still domestic violence.”
Love should always be safe.
